A Thousand Years

My heart beats faster. Colors are more bright and beautiful than I ever remember. Every promise I’ve kept with another runs through my head. My tactics of bravery through even the toughest of times skim past. I was always afraid to love, fearing I would fall and shatter. But in the distance, I see a figure standing all by their lonesome. All of my doubt suddenly disappears.

One step closer.

Time slows down as I begin to run. Wind blows through my hair and I am able to hear the blades of grass crunch underneath me. As I drew closer, I opened my arms and latched around the solitary soul.

“I have died every day waiting for you.” Their voice whispered.

My grip tightens, my head pressed against their right shoulder.

They break free and turn to me. A set of sparkling blue eyes stare into mine. My mouth pulls itself into a cheesy smile. Our hands brush past each other and our fingers gently intertwine.

“Tag,” They say softly, softly placing their other hand on my cheek. “You’re it.” They run past me and across the open field.

I turn and follow them. The warm sun beats against my back as I run. I could see their delicate brunette hair fly across their face as they turned their head to look at me. A playful smile was evident on their face. Our joyful laughter echoed through the area.

Just moments later, I was just behind them. I leapt forward and knocked them down with me. We hit the ground with a thud, but we felt no pain; we only laughed. I pulled myself on top of them with my hands firmly placed down on their torso. We smiled.

Time stands still. The bright sun shines on their face and beauty appears in all that they are. They grabbed my hands and joyfully smiled. I leaned down and pressed our lips together. If I didn’t want to loose everything placed in front of me, I had to be brave; I could let no one take it away.

“Just to think...every breath, every hour, has come to this.” They said quietly.

I nodded, pushing myself off of them. They sat up and stared at me. “And all along I believed I would find you.” I stated, my eyes trailing down to the fresh grass beneath me.

For a long moment, we simply gazed at each other. Until, “...Do you want to know a secret?” They asked.

“Sure.” I said with a smile.

They moved closer to me and leaned in close. “I have loved you for a thousand years, and I’ll love you for a thousand more.” They smiled, and I did too. Their hands grasped my red leather jacket and pulled me into a passionate kiss.

I felt a hand on my shoulder. “Anthony?” A voice asked.

My eyes slowly opened. Rain tapped against the windshield - a sound so calming and peaceful. I fidgeted around in my seat before I turned my attention to the driver. “Yeah?...” I asked sleepily.

“You’ve been asleep for quite a while. I got lonely...” They replied quietly. “...So, what did you dream about?”

I smiled slightly, looking out of the window to my right. “Um...” I mumbled, wiping the fog from the glass. Outside, I saw a large field - one like I saw in my dream. “Ian, pull over up here.”

“What? Why?” He questioned, squinting through the pouring rain.

“I’ve...I’ve got something to show you.” I said, my smile growing larger. The car was shut off and I quickly stepped out into the rain. I grabbed the other’s hand and ran off into the field.
